Physical Education (PE)

“Sport has the power to change the world.”

Nelson Mandela

At St Mary’s, we believe that Physical Education plays an important part in supporting every child’s physical development, health and wellbeing. We want our children to enjoy being active, develop confidence in their physical abilities and gain the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes that will help them lead healthy, active lives. Our PE curriculum provides children with opportunities to work independently and collaboratively, experience appropriate competition, solve problems and develop confidence, resilience and teamwork. Our PE Curriculum

We follow the Lancashire Physical Education Scheme of Work and Progression of Learning, which supports schools in meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum through a developmental approach to primary PE. PoS-PE-Lancashire-Scheme-of-Wor…

The Lancashire progression ensures that children build their physical skills, knowledge and understanding progressively as they move through school. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build upon what they have previously learned and work towards clearly defined end points.

In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, there is a strong emphasis on developing fundamental movement skills. As children progress through Key Stage 2, they increasingly apply these skills in different contexts, developing sport-specific techniques as well as their understanding of tactics, teamwork, performance and evaluation.

Children experience a broad range of activities including games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming. Our Lancashire progression documents identify how skills and knowledge develop across these different areas of PE.

PE at St Mary’s

All pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2 receive two hours of high-quality PE each week. Our curriculum is taught through planned units of work, giving children sufficient time to practise, apply and refine their skills and develop a secure understanding of their learning.

Assessment is ongoing throughout PE lessons and units. Teachers use observation, questioning and practical core tasks to identify what children know, understand and can do. This helps teachers to adapt future learning and ensure children continue to make progress.

We are committed to inclusive PE. Learning is adapted so that all pupils can participate, experience success and make progress, with appropriate support, equipment and adaptations provided where required. PE Policy Sept 26
