🌿 SEND at St Mary’s – Every Child Known, Every Child Thriving

At St Mary’s, we believe that every child is unique, created with their own gifts, strengths and potential. Our role is to truly know each child—academically, socially and emotionally—so that we can understand any barriers to learning and help every pupil to thrive.

We take a whole-child approach to identifying and supporting additional needs. This means looking beyond attainment alone and considering:

  • how children see themselves
  • their relationships with peers and adults
  • their communication and emotional wellbeing
  • and how these factors may impact learning

To support this, we use tools such as SNAP (Special Needs Assessment Profile), which helps us build a detailed picture of each child. SNAP allows us to explore areas such as specific learning difficulties (SpLD), as well as relationships, self-esteem and engagement—ensuring that support is carefully matched to each child’s needs.

We also place great importance on pupil voice and parent partnership. Children are encouraged to share their experiences, and we work closely with families, recognising that parents are the first educators of their children.

Our graduated response model (shown below) ensures that:

  • all children receive high-quality adaptive teaching
  • additional support is provided when needed
  • and specialist expertise is sought where appropriate

Above all, our aim is simple:
to remove barriers, nurture potential and enable every child to learn, grow and thrive.

Accessibility and Inclusion

The school environment is accessible to children with a range of disabilities. All internal accommodation is on a single level, radiating from the main hall area, and is fully wheelchair accessible. There is a disabled toilet.

The main school policies are held on the school’s website which has recently been reviewed and updated.

Where necessary, reviews are made of individual children’s requirements for specialised equipment/furniture, with support of the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherpy services.
